Racing cyclists know how important not only the bike and suspension are, but also that the pedals play a decisive role in the performance of the racing bike. Click pedals (in combination with the right footwear) allow a much better fit than classic pedals, the foot always sits firmly in them and the kick is optimally translated. In everyday life this may not always be practical due to the required shoe, but on longer tours or for all professional cyclists this is an important support on the track. This guide reveals what is important when buying special click pedals for racing bikes.

Bicycle & E-Bikes: Racing bike click pedals Video Guide
Click pedals are usually available in two versions, off-road and road pedals. Although cyclists can easily use off-road pedals in the city or on longer rides, special click pedals for racing bikes have a decisive advantage: they are much lighter. The top-class click pedals use carbon, which is not only particularly light, but also extremely robust. In addition, racing pedals are usually only equipped on one side with a click function, so that an optimal movement approach is given. An important factor on everyday rides is the spring tension, which determines the resistance that must be overcome in order for you to release from the pedals. Professional riders usually prefer a tighter tension, it is harder to release the pedal and during a race there are no unfavourable oversights. In road traffic, however, the tension should be somewhat looser. At the traffic light it is then easier to release the foot and put the leg down and in case of a collision the feet can also be released. Even for riders with knee problems, the spring tension of the pedals should not be too high to avoid overstraining the joints.
To make sure that the racing shoes also fit on the pedals, click pedals are supplied with so-called cleats. These cleats are clicked under the shoes and are the interface between cycling shoe and pedal. Cleats are also decisive for the float, which determines the freedom of movement, more specifically the possibility of rotation of the pedal in degrees. As a rule, the movement recentres itself after pedalling, which for some cyclists might be a change of habits. Click pedals that do not move to a neutral position on their own are also called free floats. With click pedals with free float, cyclists have a certain angle of inclination at which they can move their foot freely. If they exceed this angle, the foot automatically disengages from the pedal. Cyclists with joint problems should definitely choose this option. In addition to the correct pedals, cyclists should also ensure that their existing shoes are compatible with the cleats supplied, otherwise converter plates or new shoes may need to be purchased. A special option for professional clipless pedals is an integrated wattmeter. In contrast to the power measurement on the bike, the measurement on the pedal is much more precise and better reflects the converted pedalling power. However, an integrated measurement is only recommended for very ambitious hobby riders or professional athletes, because this form of click pedal can cost ten times as much as a regular pedal.
Click pedals are so attractive for cyclists because they minimize the loss of power transmission. A round kick moves the feet in such a way that the kick of both feet interlocks optimally. This form of power transmission is especially important on light, performance-oriented racing bikes in order to be able to really ride the racing bike out. In addition, even less experienced cyclists will find that clipless pedals allow effortless pedalling without tightening the pedals and are simply the better alternative on any bike.
