Computer, Notebooks & Tablets: Notebook Dockingstationย Video Guide
Many modern notebooks, especially the 2-in-1 hybrid devices, have incredibly slim cases. With the 10.1″ to 11.6″ notebooks, there is hardly any room left for interfaces. If there are any, they are miniature sockets, and an adapter cable is usually required for connection. The very small-format keyboards are not ergonomically favourable, and many manufacturers often do without the Ethernet connection, even with larger notebooks. The connection to the network only works via WLAN. Here again the transmission speed is often too low. All these problems are solved by a notebook docking station. It connects to a stationary computer with a larger display, more memory, a more ergonomic keyboard, mouse, additional USB interfaces, and an Ethernet port. This has always been possible, but without a notebook docking station many cables would have to be replugged. The notebook docking station simply stands on the desk, the notebook is connected to it at lightning speed, the data available there can now be retrieved from other tools. Although there are also notebooks with their own proprietary port for the optional dock, a port replicator in business notebooks also handles the connection. But these devices are among the (expensive) exceptions, such as the Tablet Venue Pro 11 from Dell or the Stylistic Q704 from Fujitsu. The universal solution for all mobile devices is the notebook docking station. Here (in the 3.0 version) a USB 3.0 cable is sufficient to connect the notebook to a computer that has one or two graphics outputs, several additional USB ports, a GBit Ethernet port and an additional audio interface.
Such notebook docking stations with USB 3.0 connectivity are available from several manufacturers, including Acer, Fujitsu, Kensington, Asus, Lenovo and Toshiba. Lenovo offers a special feature with the ThinkPad One-Link Dock, which has a mini-USB 3.0 port. Among other things, the in-house ThinkPad 8, an 8-inch Windows tablet, can be connected with it. Older, thus cheaper notebook docking stations only offer USB 2.0 ports, which significantly limit the bandwidth and are no longer considered modern.
For a 3.0 notebook docking station additional drivers have to be installed because additional USB devices are added. The basis is practically always a DisplayLink chip, mostly the DL-3900, which provides two video outputs, the audio output and the Gigabit Ethernet connection. Video transmission via USB supports HDCP 2.0 encryption. Drivers are available for 32-/64-Bit-Windows and for OSX. The power supply for the connected mobile devices is usually not via USB, the notebook or tablet must, with a few exceptions, continue to be charged via its own power supply unit.
First you have to install DisplayLink drivers, this works with every notebook docking station without problems. The connectivity then becomes visible on the computer through the new entries in the device manager. Those who only work with conventional desktop applications will be very satisfied with a notebook docking station, the second monitor works just like another keyboard perfectly. Therefore a notebook docking station is strongly recommended for flexible users.
