Hygiene products are among the most important achievements in our everyday lives. But seldom do we worry about it, but choose it on the basis of its price, appearance, or simply out of habit. The most important of these products is soap. However, since we use it several times a day and it is therefore an important part of our everyday life, we should think more about it. It doesn’t matter what brand it is, how the soap smells, or what shape and colour it has. A fundamental question, which should play an essential role in the selection, is whether it should be solid soap or liquid soap. Both variants have advantages and disadvantages, which do not make them equally suitable in every situation. In the following, the advantages and disadvantages of liquid soap will be discussed, and some products will be presented that are particularly recommendable.
Surely everyone knows the unpleasant feeling of coming into a bathroom and finding a dirty piece of soap, possibly still covered with hair. It can quickly give the impression that you should not wash your hands with this piece of soap. A soap dispenser filled with liquid soap seems to be the much better choice. The bottle, especially if you have bought it yourself and it matches the bathroom fittings, looks beautiful and makes a better impression. Liquid soap is therefore preferable for aesthetic reasons. A soap dispenser is also a more hygienic option, as long as it is regularly cleaned itself – after all, you press the button with dirty hands. But liquid soap also has many disadvantages. Especially due to growing environmental awareness, liquid soap does not appear to be the very best choice. Compared to solid pieces of soap, the liquid form requires a number of other ingredients to ensure that the soap retains its consistency and does not spoil. These ingredients are sometimes much more harmful than the few ingredients of solid soap. Not only is the environment polluted, but the skin also suffers under the influence of certain ingredients. Another problem is consumption. While with solid soap only a little is detached from the surface, several milliliters are consumed. This sounds like a small amount, but it is disproportionately larger than solid soap. The costs for liquid soap are correspondingly high. A final environmental aspect is the amount of waste. While in the best case a piece of soap can be wrapped in a small piece of recycled paper, with a whole dispenser bottle or a refill pack of plastic liquid soap there is much more and much more problematic waste. For these reasons, liquid soap should only be used where maximum hygiene and an absolutely perfect appearance are essential!
If liquid soap does have to be used, then at least care should be taken to purchase a high-quality product that is as gentle as possible. A big fallacy is that the stronger the soap foams, the better it works. In fact, foaming has no influence on the cleaning effect. It is therefore more important to pay attention to which liquid soap attacks the hands less and gives hope for better environmental compatibility. Product tests have shown that soaps from well-known manufacturers generally perform particularly well. In general, care should be taken to ensure that they are not particularly unusual soaps, which are provided with an unnecessary variety of perfumes, which can often lead to intolerance.
