Almost everyone tends with increasing age to a more or less pronounced cornea formation on the feet. The reasons for this are, on the one hand, decreasing skin moisture, unsuitable footwear and a high strain on the feet due to standing for long periods of time. Particularly affected are the heels, the lateral edges of the foot and the ball of the foot. Similarly, certain anatomical features of the feet, such as splayed and flat feet or a heel spur, can promote corneal formation. If the cornea is not treated, fine cracks and so-called fissures may appear over time. Fissures often reach into the deeper layers of the skin and can be painful. The cornea consists of dead skin cells that can be painlessly removed. Pumice stones are the classic method for corneal removal. With a rough pumice stone the skin cells are removed mechanically, as with sandpaper. Modern methods are corneal rasps and electrically operated corneal removers with rotating files. Corneal ointments are much gentler and at the same time nourishing. Corneal ointments use different principles of action. One type of ointment contains the finest pumice stone particles and natural salts to remove the skin cells and nourishes the skin with other ingredients. The second type of corneal ointment uses only chemical ingredients that dissolve the dead skin cells and provide the skin with moisture. Corneal ointments with pumice stone and salts remove the dead skin cells during rubbing. The pumice stone particles and salt crystals in the ointments are very fine and invisible to the naked eye. When used regularly, however, a noticeable reduction in the corneal layer can be clearly felt. Further ingredients of these corneal ointments, such as urea and vegetable oils, serve to make the skin smoother and to increase the moisture in the skin. Because of the double effect these corneal ointments are also called 2 in 1 ointments by the manufacturers.

Salicylic acid is often found as the main effective ingredient in corneal ointments without mechanical ingredients. The positive properties of salicylic acid in the treatment of corneas and corns have long been well documented and proven. The removal of the corneal cells causes salicylic acid in two ways. On the one hand, salicylic acid is able to directly dissolve the connection between the individual skin cells. On the other hand, the acid activates certain enzymes, which in turn separate the cell connections. Other frequently used ingredients are marigold extracts, vegetable oils and urea. Panthenol in the ointments promotes the regeneration of the skin. Lanolin, essential oils and glycerine should provide a natural moisture content. Bisabolol, the anti-inflammatory active ingredient of chamomile, is also used in various corneal ointments to soothe the skin.

Hansaplast Anti Cornea Intensive Cream with pumice stone and salts works in two phases. In the first phase, the pumice stone and salts grind off the skin cells, and in the second phase, almond oil and urea ensure soft skin.

The corneal ointment from Sanct Bernhard contains 10 percent salicylic acid. The ointment is suitable for the treatment of dry corneas and calluses as well as for the removal of corns. The contents of the tube are 90 g. Freely available corneal ointments contain a maximum of 10 percent salicylic acid. With a higher content, the ointments belong to the drugs and no longer to the cosmetics. Higher doses of ointments are therefore only available in pharmacies. With corneal ointments with pumice stone particles, an immediate or at least short-term improvement of the skin is noticeable. In the case of ointments without mechanical ingredients, a noticeable effect usually only becomes apparent after a few days or even weeks. Regular foot baths and, if possible, a change in the foot load are helpful in the treatment of cornea. In particular, it should be examined whether other footwear can contribute to relieving the burden on the affected areas and thus to relief. Soft insoles available from shoe retailers can also contribute to a significant improvement. The special properties of these insoles distribute the pressure more evenly on the foot. If a corneal ointment is used, a regular application of the ointment is in any case a basic prerequisite for a lasting improvement.
