Furniture polish has two tasks: It eliminates the damage so that it is hardly visible and protects the wood against further stress. It prevents dust from settling on it and makes the surface more resistant to moisture. Those who want to keep their furniture beautiful for a long time should treat it more frequently with furniture polish.
Basically any real solid wood can be treated with furniture polish, no matter if oak, beech, teak or mahogany. The only important thing is that the piece of furniture is really made of solid wood or genuine wood veneer and has a lacquered surface. Furniture polish does not work on chipboard and synthetic wood, because the agent cannot penetrate into the natural pores of the wood. With untreated real wood, it is better to use wood oils or certain wood waxes instead of furniture polish. However, there are also very high-quality polishes with which untreated wood can be maintained.
In the past, housewives made their own furniture polish. They mixed oil, preferably olive oil, with lemons, vinegar and other herbal essences. These polishes attack the wood because of the acidity they contain. Modern furniture polishes available on the market are made from medical oils and acid-free additives. Many manufacturers do not add fragrances in order to avoid unnecessary air pollution.
There are a few things to keep in mind when cleaning wooden furniture with furniture polish. It is important to use the right cloth. Microfibre cloths, for example, are not suitable for the treatment of wood. They bind dust and dirt in the tissue. When polishing the wood, they act like small stones and scratch the wood, especially when rubbed on a high-gloss surface. As soft and clean as possible dust cloths are optimal. Before applying the furniture polish, the piece of furniture must be carefully cleaned so that there are no more dirt particles on it. A few drops of furniture polish are applied either on the dust cloth or directly on the wood. The cloth is used to distribute the polish in the same way as the grain of the wood. After a short soaking time, the treated piece of furniture is wiped with a clean linen cloth, for example a tea towel, to remove excess polish.
When buying the right furniture polish, several criteria are decisive. Is it light or dark wood? There are polishes that are only suitable for dark wood species such as mahogany, while others care for light wood. Transparent polishes can be used universally, but the grain of dark woods does not show to advantage. Some products contain chemical additives that pollute the air we breathe. They often smell unpleasant. A furniture polish with chemical additives is not suitable for children’s furniture and table tops for health reasons.
